Dreams roll and drip slowly off my skin like a wound bleeding, destined to cloud the water and cascade gently towards the horizon, holding hands with seconds and minutes. Today I reflect on one decade ago, 9/11/2008. I was prepping to go off to war. 9/11/01 changed everything for the entire world. Perspectives were rocked and the reverberations of the pain are still felt today. I live my life wholly in gratitude of the experiences I have survived and things that I’ve learned through the struggles of my service, and pain thereafter. It has made strong, resilient, and punishingly observant. I owe much of what I am to the people who lost it all on that day in September, 2001. I went forth down a path of misery and self-degradation and came out the other end alive and capable of pursuing a life to honor those who do not live anymore. I just want to take a second and send love to anyone who may be struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction. I have worked so hard at battling my own demons and understand how difficult an escape can be. I came to a point in my life where I hated who I saw in the mirror and didn’t quite grasp that it was because I was poisoning myself. The opposite of loving myself. It was during my recovery from depression that I was enlightened to love myself and forgive myself for the lot of pain that I had been holding on to, and trying to numb with substance. There is hope but it takes will. It takes determination and a drive that is extraordinary. That is an understatement for those who know. I really wish health and love to everyone that I know. This world is cruel, and that is all I really see anymore.
